Rockies Playoff Hopes Rest on Power and Youth
This season is like most for Colorado in one area, the power. The Rockies acquired one of the games best sluggers, Travis Snider from Pittsburgh on July 31. Since obtaining Snider the Rockies have gone 29-14 and hold a 1 game lead in the Wild Card race and sit 4 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central Division.
Snider 42-113-.285 joins an already formidable lineup that includes David LaRoche 47-142-.326, Matt Tolbert 52-151-.296 and Donald Robinson 47-151-.345. The 4 players hitting 3-4-5-6 in the lineup present a serious problem for pitching staffs, especially when traveling to Mile High Coors Field where the 4 of them have hit over 100 long ones.
The Rockies have not made the playoffs in 5 years and one of the main reasons has been pitching. But the Rockies have been busy all of those years drafting pitchng and this years staff is made up of eight 1st or 2nd round picks and 3rd and 8th round selections. The question will be is the young group, 9 of them 25 years of age and younger ready to hit center stage this early in their career.
The next 2 weeks will be the test, will the youngsters be ready? Will power be able to overcome inexperience? Is a playoff appearance close or in the future? Tough questions to answer right now, but one thing is for sure the future is looking real good.
